I am also a teacher and have gone there for CTE professional learning also, the back road tours were amazing. It is the largest privately owned estate in the US.
They even have a medical facility on the the grounds for their workers. They grow all the food for their restaurants. The fee may seem high to some people, but the money is used to keep the estate going. When Mrs. Vanderbilt was living there she would go to the village where the workers lived on the property to have Bible study once a week.
She found out most could not read so she started teaching them how to read. Great family and so many things people do not know.
